4. What matters most cannot be taken away.
5. Just do the next right thing one thing at a time. That'll take you all the way home.”
This fifth truism has carried me through a lot of challenging times. From difficult postural practices to heartbreaks to moving across the country on my own: sometimes looking too far ahead can leave us feeling overwhelmed with uncertainty and unable to move forward. At times, looking at just the next right thing we need to do is really what is best. Our postural practices can look like this: intuitive, incremental, and taking into account the next thing that is most right for us.
This practice encourages that. It starts with a sequence that I’ve used many times over to arrive at a place where I feel warmed up and open enough to move deeper in the direction of whatever feels most right for me that day—whether that be backbends, forward bends, arm balances, or otherwise.
We begin with some Sun Salutations, and then work to open the hips in externally rotated standing postures. From there we take the opposite approach and work internally rotated standing poses. I continue in that direction toward Hero’s Pose, and finally Mermaid Pose, an asymmetrical backbend taken from Pigeon.
Do what serves you.
